What are seat reservations?

Modified on Thu, 08 Jun 2023 at 04:48 PM

Seat reservations are not included in your Interrail France Germany Pass, but for a fee they guarantee you a comfy seat on busy routes across Europe. For most high-speed trains and all night trains reservations are mandatory.

In order to avoid seat reservations, we recommend using regional trains that don’t require a reservation. This usually means you'll have a few more train transfers and longer journey times, but it also gives you the chance to see more of the beautiful French or German countryside. It’s not always possible to avoid trains with reservations, but it’s always worth checking in the Interrail timetable.

  • In France: With your Interrail Pass you can travel on most trains in France. However, many French trains need to be reserved in advance, and some of them have limited seats for Interrail Pass holders. The following trains have limited seats for Interrail pass holders. We highly recommend you reserve these trains as soon as possible.
    1. TGV high-speed trains on domestic routes
    2. InterCité train
    3. ICE / TGV high speed trains between France and Germany
  • In Germany: In Germany it's not mandatory to have a seat reservation on  ICE / IC trains. However, it is recommended to buy a seat reservation if you're travelling in a group. This way you cannot be asked to leave a seat, which might happen if you don't have a reservation.
