Disabled passengers with a disability card can contact Interrail to upgrade their Interrail pass so that they can experience first class train travel. In addition, if you need some assistance along the way, you could be eligible to apply for a complimentary Interrail Pass for your caregiver. Please contact the Interrail customer service team for more information.
Railway companies in France and Germany offer facilities for disabled passengers. Standards vary between countries and railway companies, but in many cases disabled travellers can expect the following:
- Special train compartments for wheelchair users
- Lifts or mobile ramps to access the train
- Assistance boarding the train by trained staff
- Toilets suitable for disabled travellers
In France: Assistance can be requested here and at least 24 hours in advance for trains operated by SNCF. More information can be found here (mobility guide in French).
In Germany: Assistance can be requested here and by 8 p.m. the day before the departure at the latest for domestic trips for trains operated by DB. A 48 hour notice is required for international trains. More information can be found here (in German).
